Introduction:

Iranian society has undergone, and continues to experience, exceptionally rapid changes in most spheres of life, especially in the social and cultural realm. There has been no attempt to draw together the work that has been done on the various strands of change or to make sense of it in an overall context. The aim of this workshop is to take steps towards filling this vacuum which will, at the same time, go some way to introducing some of the most important research that has been done on Iranian society, to an interested and informed public.
