Introduction

An award winning calligrapher, Mehrdad Shoghi was born in 1972 in Tehran, Iran. During his artistic career, he has participated in fifteen group exhibitions and eight solo exhibitions in Iran, Canada, Kuwait, Dubai, Switzerland and Turkey.

Different projects in mid-1990's commissioned by Ministry of Culture and Art to reconstruct/reproduce old calligraphic masterpieces led him to an intense study of the first samples of Quranic manuscripts in Kufic dated A.D 600 to 700. The spirit embedded in this style attracted him so much that soon he found himself dedicated to Kufic writing. Khatt-e-Mehr was the fruit of his studies and experiences with Kufic writing.

In 1997, at the 'Traditional Iranian Painting' exhibition in Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art, Shoghi won the award in the third biennial of the Iranian Islamic painting as well as the Second Nation-wide Arts Exhibition of 'University Students Award for Restoration and Illumination'. Shoghi's participation in 'Calligraphy' exhibition in 2001 in Tehran Museum of Contemporary Arts not only won him an award but also his work was purchased as a part of the permanent collection of the Imam Ali museum. The subjects of his artworks mostly are from well known Iranian Sufi poets such as Rumi, Hafiz and Abdollah Ansari. Shoghi's works have also been exhibited at the Reza Abbasi Museum in Tehran and are part of the permanent collection of most major museums in Iran.

Mehrdad Shoghi lives and works in Toronto, Canada.
