NO ONE KNOWS ABOUT PERSIAN CATS A film by Bahman Ghobadi Persian with English Subtitles 23 March 2010 7:30 pm Ritzy Brixton, Coldharbour Lane, London SW2 1JG 31 March 2010 8:00 pm Lumière Cinema, South Kensington, London SW7 2DT Two special screenings of No One Knows About Persian Cats, winner of the Special Jury Prize in Cannes 2009, prior to its national release on 26 March 2010. The screening at the Ritzy will be introduced by its director, Bahman Ghobadi, followed by a live performance from Ash and Negar from Take it Easy Hospital, and DJ Shahram Norz playing an eclectic mix of Persian music until midnight in Upstairs at the Ritzy. The screening at Lumière Cinema also includes a Q&A with the stars.

Introduction

No One Knows About Persian Cats, screened in the Un Certain Regard section of the Cannes Film Festival 2009, explores the underground music scene in Tehran which, perhaps unexpectedly, turns out to be a hotbed of rappers, metal bands and indie rockers who sport Strokes T-shirts and line their rehearsal spaces with Joy Division posters.

The film is directed by Bahman Ghobadi and continues his long-term interest in a kind of political resistance offered by music. It tells the story of a young man and a young woman as they plan to launch a music group shortly after their release from prison. Both characters travel to Tehran, where they meet other underground rock musicians and attempt to convince them to leave Iran. However, without money or passports, their dreams to flee to Europe in order to play music freely seem improbable.
