Introduction

In her feature-film debut, Women Without Men, adapted from the novel of the same name by Iranian author Shahrnush Parsipur, Shirin Neshat weaves together the stories of four individual women whose experiences are shaped by their faith and the social structures in place, in order to explore the position of women within the rigid confines of patriarchal Iranian culture. Fakhri, a middle aged woman trapped in a loveless marriage must contend with her feelings for an old flame who has just returned from America and walks back into her life. Zarrin, a young prostitute, leaves the brothel for a bathhouse where she attempts to find redemption by cleansing her body. Munis, a politically awakened young woman, must resist the seclusion imposed on her by her religiously traditional brother, while her friend Faezeh remains oblivious to the social and political turmoil in the streets and longs only to marry Munis’ domineering brother.

With a camera that floats effortlessly through the lives of the women, Neshat explores the social, political, and psychological dimensions of her characters as they meet in a metaphorical garden, where they can exist and reflect while the complex intellectual and religious forces shaping their world linger in the air around them. Looking at Iran from Neshat’s point of view allows us to see the larger picture and realize that the human community resembles different organs of one body, created from a common essence.
