Plastic is inspired by stories of men who want to become women, exploring the creation of gender identity and how the law supports desire in a dynamic and stylish piece of contemporary performance.

Introduction

30 Bird's Total Theatre nominated site specific production PLASTIC is coming to London to the Whitechapel Gift Shop, originally a sawmill, now converted to a private residence and arts space, located alongside the Royal London Hospital.

PLASTIC premiered at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2008, where it was nominated for the Total Theatre Award in Experimentation and Innovation and selected by The Guardian as one of the top four shows at the Festival.

30 Bird Productions

30 Bird creates performance, film, music and art exploring the meeting points between Eastern and Western cultures. The work of 30 Bird is non-narrative, exploring the visual, audio and textual expressions of desire. 30 Bird begins each project through a set of images establishing connections of texture, rhythm and composition. The work of 30 Bird is performed in different venues: theatres, cinemas and indoor and outdoor sites.

Founded in 1996 at the Riverside Studios, 30 Bird’s previous works include The Parable of the Blind (Shaw Theatre), Death By Heroine (Riverside Studios), but you speak such good English (documentary) and Two Obstacles to Marriage (short film).

Recent work includes theatre projects Majnoun, The Persian Revolution (both for national tour), film work Yalda and Shoes (with Film London and the BBC), site responsive performance installation Plastic nominated for the Total Theatre Award Innovation and Experimentation (Edinburgh 08, Village Green 09, Victoria Baths Manchester) and most recently Chodzenie, a city-wide project set in Southend. Poland 3 Iran 2 will be going to Edinburgh Festival 2010 at the Pleasance.

30 Bird works with practitioners from various disciplines: architecture, science, the visual arts, dance, music, theatre and film. 30 Bird’s work has an international flavour, collaborating with artists and practitioners from as varied a background as the UK, Iran, Germany, Italy, Turkey, Spain and India.
